COVID kills rational thinking!
It’s a scientific fact that stress creates, anxiety, depression, anger, and loneliness. Being confined to isolation has a negative effect on our well-being and is an increasing issue with our ageing population.
Negative emotions are resulted from stress and the current COVID threat creates stress. Did you know that when stressed, we humans have a survival technique that automatically shuts down parts of our body and biological functions to preserve energy?
It preserves energy to either fight, flight or freeze by shutting down functions that your unconscious mind determines are not required to survive for that focused moment in time.
The first major function that gets shut down is your immune system. And think about that, if you have a suppressed immune system, how does your body deal with the incoming threat of Coronavirus or in fact any other virus?
When in a threat-based method of survival, your unconscious mind takes control and does what it knows kept us alive before, no matter how irrational!
The unconscious mind has control of our life 95% of the time and allows us to live life on autopilot calling on our learnt behaviours. In addition to running the show for 95% of the time it is also has one million times the processing power of our conscious creative thinking mind.
When stressed, we tend to operate from the unconscious mind and shut down our rational conscious mind as a survival technique.
This survival strategy is rooted from Caveman days and suited us when threats were a matter of life and death, like being threatened by a Sabre-Toothed Tiger! However, the same strategy happens when we suffer any stress, whether its financial, job security, fear of acceptance or the sudden arrival of COVID. We were never designed to live on a constant state of stress.
